CRIME ALERT- Mountain Precinct HOA's

Multiple mailbox�s were damaged in the Conifer Meadows subdivision, specifically reported in the 11800 - 11900 block of Cochise Circle, 25200 block of Red Cloud Drive and the 11600 � 11800 block of Broken Arrow Drive. This occurred overnight on January 1st into January 2nd.

Although at present we have no suspect information, it is important that any damage to your property be reported. Should a person or persons be found responsible, the prosecution for these crimes will be much stronger and the penalties more severe. Please call our 24 hour number of 303-271-0211 for all non-emergency calls and/or reports to the Sheriff�s Office, or visit our website at jeffco.us/sheriff/ to report online.

Found iPhone at Denver Mtn Park trailhead

On Thanksgiving, I found an iPhone (4S, I think), along west side of Armadillo, right at DMP trailhead / parking turnout.

It could belong to a visitor or local EM resident, but the back glass is shattered and still powers up and is password protected Dr. Seuss "Thing One and Thing Two" screen saver.

With cracked case it is probably not useful but SIM card may have pics or info owner wants back.

Lost Christmas Gifts

On Christmas evening a bag of opened Christmas gifts (including an Artist Wooden box with paints and brushes and pencils) were lost out of a back window of an SUV

This occurred somewhere between 7844 Armadillo Trail and Hwy 73.

Possible Break-in Attempt (Needles Trail)

A report of suspicious activity was received Friday, Dec9 at 6:00 PM:

We came home last night and found that our programmable door lock wouldn't accept the house key. It had worked fine earlier in the day. We went to another entry door and unlocked it right away.

The door with the programmable lock cannot be seen from the street while our front door is readily visible.

Today we tried all of our house keys on the broken lock and none worked. It became obvious to us that someone had tried to reprogram the lock to gain entry. On discussing this with a JeffCo Deputy he felt the same way.

The lock did its job but must now be replaced. At least no one was able to gain entry.

Handyman Scams

GREETINGS FROM YOUR CRIME PREVENTION DEPUTY,

October is National Crime Prevention month and I�d like to share some crime prevention tips with you about scams. There have had a few local scams reported to the Sheriff�s Office regarding so called handymen services. While there have not been enough reports to qualify as a crime trend, I feel this information should be shared with our citizens. Most of us think of scams as someone pressuring us into a purchase or promising us something they do not deliver. However scams come in several types. The two reported to the Sheriff�s Office are regarding home repairs.

The victims hired a couple of handymen to do a specific job around their homes. While doing that job the handymen create more work for themselves by tearing out a fence or a stairway claiming it was in poor repair and needed to be fixed. Their claim, and scam, is they are looking out for your safety. They do this without consulting the homeowner first and then tell the homeowner how much it will cost to replace the already demolished item. Most people want the fence, walkway, stairs or item in question replaced so they agree to the cost of the construction. This cost includes the purchase of materials as well as labor, putting more money in the scammers� pocket.

TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE HIRING A HANDMAN:

- Before you hire a handyman or contractor, ask for local references that you can speak to in person.
- Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if they have had any complaints filed against them. The phone number for the Better Business Bureau is 303-758- 8200.
- Have written contract detailing the work to be done as well as when the work should be completed. Make sure the contract stipulates that any additional repairs or work must be first approved of in writing before the work is to be completed.
- Be cautions of solicitors coming door to door offering handyman work or claiming to see work needing to be done on your house. A popular scam has been roof replacement and driveway paving and sealing. If you are in doubt, have an established business come out to do an evaluation and repair estimate.
- Be wary of the high pressure sales tactics or a deal that must be made immediately with the person at your front door.
- Make sure you have complete information about the business, not just a business card with only a first name.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU BELIEVE YOU HAVE BEEN A VICTIM OF A SCAM?

If you have questions or feel you have been a victim of a scam, call the Sheriff�s Office and report it. Without a report the Sheriff�s Office doesn�t know it�s happening and cannot follow up on it. Not reporting it also allows the suspect to continue and potentially creates more victims. In some cases a situation is civil and not a criminal offense. The responding deputy can help determine that for you. For assistance call 303-271- 0211.

Two missing dogs

Our dogs wandered off tonight (Wed 10/12). They may or may not be together. They are both tri colored (black/white/brown). Missy is a border collie mix. Porter is an Australian shepherd and needs a special diet. If you happen to see them out and about we sure would appreciate you trying to take them in and giving us a call.

Suspicious Person alert

Please notify your members that there was a burglary that occurred in the Evergreen Meadows subdivision. That same day a white male, tall with light brown short hair in his 40's or early 50's. He was driving a white pickup truck with no markings or business sign on it went to a nearby resident and was soliciting handyman work. He said he noticed a for sale sign out front and wondered if they needed any work done. It is unknown if that was a story since someone answered the door or if he was knocking on the door to determine if there was anyone home.

This description also fits a male who has scammed people in the Evergreen area while performing handyman work around the home.

If a person with this description and vehicle is seen in your neighborhood please call the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office at 303 271 0211 or in emergency 911.

Bear Spotted on Centaur Dr 9-19-11

We received a bear spotting today from a homeowner:

We wanted to alert you that a 3 to 4 year old black bear climbed an Aspen tree off of our back deck to try and get to our bird feeder. We saw him climb down. This happened at 7736 Centaur Dr at 11:30 a.m. Monday 9-19-11. The bear became startled and took off running through the woods off our property. We did notice that there were no ear tags on the bear.

BERRIAN MOUNTAIN HIKE THIS SATURDAY 8/27 AT 9AM

Did you know there is beautiful undeveloped Denver Mountain Park land
immediately adjacent to Evergreen Meadows? Berrian Mountain is the peak
that towers over Armadillo Trail on the east side of our subdivision. The
Denver Mountain Park property encompasses 80 acres and intersects with
Evergreen Meadows at �upper� Armadillo Trail (north of Chipmunk and south
of Wolverine). There is an unmarked trailhead there that leads to the peak.

The EMHA will lead a hike to the top of Berrian Mountain this Saturday
August 27, leaving the trailhead at 9:00 am. The hike takes roughly three
hours roundtrip. It is a fairly strenuous uphill climb with an elevation
gain of roughly 1000 feet. If it is a nice day, we encourage you to bring a
bag lunch to enjoy at the peak, where you can see Denver to the east,
Indian Peaks to the north, Mt Evans to the west, and the Conifer Town
Center to the south.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Andy Potter by
replying to this email or call 303-674-0651. Depending on the level of
interest, we may do some carpooling to minimize parking problems at the
trailhead. If you know the trail well and would like to help lead the hike,
we would love your help.

DIRECTIONS: If the trailhead had a street number it would be roughly 8240
Armadillo Trail. Look for a phone pole with a sign that designates the
boundary between Evergreen Fire Department (uphill/north side) and Elk
Creek Fire Department (downhill/south side). Once you find that phone pole,
go north/uphill (toward Evergreen) about 100 yards and look for the flat
parking spot on the left. That flat spot is roughly opposite the trailhead.

Last year, about a dozen residents and several canine companions completed
the hike. We hope to see you Saturday!

Evergreen Meadows Neighborhood Garage Sale

Sign-Up - Evergreen Meadows Neighborhood Garage Sale

The annual Evergreen Meadows Neighborhood Garage Sale is coming on July 15
& 16. This year we will be back to the optimal Friday & Saturday schedule.
As usual, the homeowner�s association will pay to advertise in the local
newspapers and station signs and maps at all entrances to the neighborhood.
If you wish to participate, call or email me to sign-up and let me know
if you would like to participate on Friday and/or Saturday (the hours are
tentatively scheduled for 8 AM � 4 PM), and then just have your garage sale
goodies ready and waiting on your property on the day of the sale.
Although your house will be marked on the map, unless your site is very
obvious, it is also recommended that you call attention to your own
location with signs and balloons. The only requirement for garage sale
participation is to be a dues paying member of the Evergreen Meadows
Homeowner�s Association.

Bear sightings

We've had a number of residents report a bear sighting. Here's one of the
reportings:

I'd like to report that there has been a brown black bear quite frequently
around our house on Grizzly Way. He is about 150-200 lbs and is not
intimidated at all. When he finally left my home he went to our closest
neighbor and entered their garage. Usually, we may see bears once or twice
a month but this guy is sticking around. I have no feeders but had left a
gallon jug of vinegar that I use as a deterent for a persistent coon
problem under our deck and I can't believe it but it loved the stuff!

I can't say that he/she has been agressive but no shouting or loud noise
seems to affect this bear at all. My pepper spray is handy at all times
but everyone should be on high alert. Bring in your feeders, pets and pet
foods, garbage etc.

Whine and Weeds

Come to WHINE AND WEEDS this Friday, June 10 at Judy Ostenaa's house, 7814
Armadillo Trail. This is an informal gathering of neighbors to learn more
about weeds that are invading our area.

Libations and tapas type food will be served and it will be a good chance
to chat with fellow EMHA members. Literature on weeds will be available. I
hope many can come for a while or the evening as I look forward to chatting

Evergreen Meadows Soundoff is a new Meadowlark column we started last fall
in the hopes of engaging our readers in meaningful observations of our
community. Anyone in the community can submit anything to Soundoff; your

prefer your name included). The Meadowlark editors will look through the
submissions received and publish all notes/stories that are not offensive

More vandalism at Gilmer's

Dear neighbors,

-Sun. Jan 23rd ~ midnight
-27203 Armadillo Way. Home of Todd and Mary Gilmer
-eggs thrown @ our home from the east side of our house hitting the roof,
deck, vehicle, etc

- Two teens were spotted by Todd, running from our yard. They got into a
small car and sped away at high speed going north with their car lights
OFF. They left behind an egg carton from Safeway.

-Jeffco Deputy Sheriff responded immediately. He came to our home and
investigated and filed a report, while we cleaned up the mess. We were all
awake for several hours.

Update on vandalism last week:

We appreciate the many phone calls of support and prayers from our
neighbors and friends, especially those who came to help clean up the
mess.
-Jeffco Deputy Sheriff filed a report and contacted Conifer High School
Community Resource Officer.

About a dozen eggs were thrown from Armadillo Trail and hit the east side
of our home (roof, sliding door, windows, deck, yard, etc�)

Besides disturbing our sleep, this a difficult mess to clean up. If you
know our family, we have not been sleeping much the last year. I will be
contacting the sheriff.

Please be on the lookout for anything suspicious.

Black dog missing

We are searching for a 10 lb. Shitzsu named Jasmine or Jazzie. Black
adult, last seen Friday evening 12-10-10 at home of the Jackie & Bill Bell
(28650 Cavan Lane on the west side of 73). This dog is from Aurora so
doesn't know her way around up here. Anyone seeing this dog, please call

* Covenants - review and further investigate covenants violations
* ARB - review and further investigate Architectural Review Board

* Membership - track membership dues and facilitate annual membership drive
and follow-up
* Social/Special Events - facilitate all our special neighborhood events
* Landscape - manage the various new and existing landscape projects

Late season bear sighting

They are not in hibernation yet! Spotted a ~300lb bear at 5:15pm Tuesday
10/12 in the 8800 block of Grizzly Way -- just ran across the road and up
the property.

Thu Sept 30.

Jeffco Fire Ban in Effect

Sheriff Orders Fire Ban for all Areas of Unincorporated Jefferson County

Effective on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 9 a.m., a fire ban has been
implemented for all areas of unincorporated Jefferson County. These
restrictions are intended to reduce the likelihood of human-caused
wildfires.

This temporary fire ban supersedes all previous fire restrictions and fire
bans. This order applies to all lands in unincorporated Jefferson County,
to include all federal lands.

Because of continuing high fire danger conditions in Jefferson County, the
following activities are strictly prohibited:
1. Anything which produces an open flame or has the potential to create an
uncontrolled fire.
2. Building, maintaining, attending or using any fire to burn trash,
debris, fence rows or vegetation, or any campfire or warming fire.
3. Use of charcoal or other open fires on any public or private lands.
4. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or while stopped
in an area of at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of
all combustible material.
5. Operating a chain saw without a USDA or SAE approved spark arresting
device properly installed and in effective working order, and having a
chemical pressurized fire extinguisher of not less than eight (8) ounces
capacity by weight, and possessing one large size pointed shovel with an
overall length of at least thirty-six (36) inches. The extinguisher shall
be with the chain saw operator. The shovel may be kept with the fueling
supplies, but readily available for quick use.
6. Welding or operating an acetylene or other torch with an open flame,
except within an area that is barren or cleared of all combustible material
at least ten feet on all sides from the equipment.
7. Use of an explosive initiation system requiring a burning fuse line.
8. Permissible fireworks, as defined by Colorado Revised Statutes,
12-28-101.

Exemptions to this temporary fire ban are listed below:
>> Persons with a valid written permit from the Sheriff and/or the local
fire department which specifically authorizes the prohibited act.
>> Any federal, state, or local law enforcement officer, or member of an
organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an official
duty.
>> Any fires contained within liquid fueled or gas fueled stoves.
NOTE: Burn permits issued and not executed prior to the effective date of
this temporary fire ban shall not be authorized unless one of the
exemptions listed above applies.

Exemptions to this temporary fire ban shall be granted within non-federal
land only by the Sheriff, and/or the local fire department only if the
proposed action is deemed by the Sheriff and/or the local fire department
or district to be safe and mitigable.

Individuals operating under any of the above exemptions shall take adequate
measures to prevent uncontrolled fires. Possible measures include, but are
not limited to:
>> Containers of adequate water or dry soil nearby.
>> Shovels, fire extinguishers, or other extinguishing agents nearby.
>> Coordination with the local fire department or district to be on scene
or standby during the activity.

Pursuant to County Resolution CC 97-433, violations of these prohibitions,
upon conviction, is punishable by a fine of not more than $600.00. Such
act(s) violate section(s) 102.8 and 308.2.1 of the International Fire Code.

This temporary fire ban becomes effective at 9 a.m. on September 14, 2010,
and shall remain in effect until superseded or rescinded.
